When meandering through the streets of NYC, always remember to look up; a skyward glance could reveal an inspiring new perspective of city architecture, a beautiful slice of blue sky through the buildings, or, if you’re sauntering down historic Christopher Street in the West Village, a trove of exquisite design at tiny, charming boutique, Fairlight.
Fairlight is indeed a few steps up from street level - if you’re not looking for it, you might very well assume you’re passing by yet another picturesque brownstone. But to step inside this cozy, eclectic space is like being transported to the bohemia that once defined this neighborhood - minus the crime, grime, and illegal drugs.

Fairlight’s own Alix of Bohemia label features extraordinary jackets and outerwear made in small batches; each piece is a work of wearable art. These whimsical creations are flush with hand finishes - ornate embroidery, grommets, beading, ribbons, patchwork, or contrast stitching give each design a distinctive, luxurious feel. Each piece also includes a remarkable printed lining, making the interior as artful as the exterior. Given that jetset designer Alix Verley-Pietrafesa splits her time between New York and Mallorca, it’s no surprise that her designs possess a free-spirited international flair. While our favorite piece from the wide assortment was a silky blue velvet jacket featuring extraordinary silver embroidery and coin embellishments, any of these statement-makers would pair perfectly with a classic t-shirt and jeans ensemble, or could add panache to a streamlined evening dress. While definitely not for those on a budget (we’re talking four figures), if one has the funds, these rare finds are worth every penny.
In addition to the store’s signature label, Fairlight offers an incredible selection of vintage - our top finds included Chanel trousers ($275), a Bill Blass coat, and a cherry-red leather Claude Montana varsity jacket ($375).
Colorful Jason Murillo hats and a considerable assortment of vintage jewelry round out the shelves at this quintessential West Village boutique. Once you’ve stepped up and into this bohemian wonderland, walk a few steps down to the basement level of 13 Christopher and grab a cup of joe at Fairlight’s likewise charming downstairs neighbor.
