Flying Solo is a gold mine of cutting-edge independent designers; it’s impossible not to discover new labels to love while browsing the racks at this spacious, bi-level Soho collective (we left with a list of nearly a dozen names to keep on our radar).

While most multi-label stores in the neighborhood tend to artfully mix their brands on the racks, Flying Solo pays tribute to each featured designer, showcasing them individually – a thoughtful way to introduce shoppers to emerging talent and their unique aesthetics. At every turn, there is a new designer to meet and explore – and with such a vast space on West Broadway, there is so much exploring to do.
To say Flying Solo covers the full spectrum of style needs is an immense understatement: their merchandise includes everything from casual t-shirts from eco-conscious Ashley Raynor, to artful eyewear from Coco & Breezy, to wetsuits – a sparkling, electric pink one by Mermaid Wave Wear would tempt even a non-surfer (us) to try a new hobby, if only for the sake of style.
While a rack featuring one fashion rebel we all know – Vivienne Westwood – caught our eye, it was the new creatives on the block who left us coveting a larger wardrobe budget (a much larger one). Etoile Vierge's dazzling leather jackets with exquisite beading beg for a photoshoot on a nearby cobblestone street; similarly elaborate works of wearable art from Vietnamese designer Thuy Nguyen, and rainbow-hued, sequined pieces from Lenshina Nchami are made for the street-style set - no filter required.
Don’t miss the treasure trove of eveningwear on Flying Solo’s lower level (a friendly sales associate thankfully wouldn’t let us leave without checking it out) – ethereal gowns from Elmadawy had us dreaming about the fast-approaching spring gala season.
With an energetic yet relaxed vibe – and an exciting mix of emerging designers on offer – Flying Solo is a refreshing, inspiring addition to the Soho retail scene.
