Drawing comparisons to Everlane, it strives to create clothing made from responsibly sourced and ethical materials, and each of its collections is designed, photographed, and packaged in its San Francisco headquarters. Located in the Marina, Modern Citizen’s physical space is a minimalist design nerd’s dream. It’s whitewashed walls and wooden floors serve as the perfect backdrop for its racks of neutral-toned clothing, sculptural tables, Wassily chairs, and graphic art prints. Airy mobiles hang from its ceiling and its shelves are lined with the types of pastel-hued homegoods that would make for a much-hearted Instagram post, giving it the allure of Copenhagen’s coolest boutiques but with offerings that cost a fraction of the price.

Modern Citizen carries clothing by its eponymous brand, with basics comprising the bulk of its collections. You’ll find crewneck sweaters, A-line skirts, button-up shirts, wrap dresses, suits, tees, and the like aplenty, as well as some dressier styles like puff-sleeve mini dresses, silky slip dresses, and one-shoulder tops. Everything can be mixed and matched with ease and nothing feels overly trend based, meaning they’re timeless pieces that you’ll want to wear for years, if not decades, to come.

Accessories-wise, Modern Citizen carries gorgeous leather sandals by Jaggar that boast modern shapes and the occasional buckle or patent finish, as well as minimalist silver and gold jewelry by Wolf Circus, Leah Alexander, Thatch, and other brands.
