It may come as a surprise for many of its millennial and Gen Z followers that Need Supply Co. is older than most e-commerce stores. It began as a small boutique in Richmond, Virginia carrying hard-to-find Levi’s jeans in 1996. Early-Internet era, this was pretty groundbreaking, especially since there were only a few stores in town that had access to global brands.
Since then, this minimalist fashion brand has grown to include menswear, womenswear, accessories, beauty, and even home goods from various labels. In 2008, it established its first website and offered worldwide shipping.
It put a lot of up-and-coming brands on the map while bringing global brands to its customers, catapulting the company’s growth. Eventually, it started its own product line aptly named NEED.

Its appeal is hard to miss. Brands under Need Supply Co. reflect a minimalist but fashion-forward sensibility. Expect to find clean lifestyle sneakers, outdoorsy jackets, and denim staples in classic silhouettes. Occasionally, you can also spot dressier wardrobe items like animal print culottes or a satin dress.
The home goods are as functional and fresh as the fashion line, with a diverse range of items from sophisticated bath products (there are CBD lip balms!) to luggage.
On top of the impressive collections, Need Supply Co. adds dimension to the overall customer experience by way of its fashion, lifestyle, and design blog, the Human Being Journal. It’s the very same medium that helped Need Supply Co. build an audience in Japan, where it opened a second retail store in 2015.
Need Supply Co. may not be some overly marketed label that everyone buzzes about. But those who are in the know are not disappointed. Need Supply Co. is a retailer that knows how to stay top of mind despite shifting trends and tastes, and without a doubt, it is here to stay.
