You can tell that Tibi founder, Amy Smilovic, takes pride in her brand’s story – a display found just inside her New York flagship store artfully reveals milestones on the 22-year Tibi timeline, each turningpoint charmingly displayed on the silhouette of a garment pattern. The timeline is a thoughtful nod to what it takes to make it as an independently owned contemporary brand in 2020.

Smilovic’s designs are likewise thoughtful: the Tibi girl is polished, sophisticated, and unfussy, but still fresh – and a little flirty. Tibi looks stand out in a crowd, but they do so quietly. The Soho store is stocked with pieces that are a little bit fun and definitely functional; our favorite items being unique separates that could be styled with basics that already live in your closet. A featherweight pleated nylon skirt in bold, shimmering silver would pair perfectly with a simple white tee, as would Tibi’s rubberized blue tie-dye skirt (a high-tech coating cleverly allows the statement-making piece to keep its unique scuplted shape). A delicate semi-sheer melon blouse with accordion pleating would look great with your favorite high-waisted denim, as would Tibi’s cozy cropped sweaters – designed with an unexpected, revealing open back.

Looking for an easy “toss it on and forget it” item? Tibi’s sustainably made eco-silk cape dress with zipper details is modern, functional, and totally transitional from day to night; the lightweight, sporty frock features a removable cape for in-the-moment customization. The Celia jumpsuit was another favorite find; made in a high-shine faux leather material with a sexy low-cut back and an edgy buckle detail, it’s a confident look that doesn’t require a lot of effort (who has time to fuss when you look this chic?!).

The overall vibe of the Wooster Street store is clean and minimal, similar to a showroom; while some racks may appear to be sparsely merchandised, they actually allow customers to get a better look at the clothes (not to fret - more sizes are available to try on). Comfortable seating, upbeat music, and a friendly but un-pushy staff are nice additions to the Tibi shopping experience, as is an Insta-friendly wall of branded merch - Candles! T-shirts! Mugs! - because, after all, this is a contemporary label in 2020.
