While Uterqüe is not a newcomer, it’s relatively undiscovered, only familiar to industry insiders and fashion editors. If this is your first time hearing about Zara’s sister brand—and if you happen to have an appetite for more grown-up designs—consider this your introduction.

Uterqüe was initially set up to be an accessories brand. Founded in 2008 in Spain, its name came from the Latin word that means “one thing and the other” or “both”, reflecting the brand’s mission to restore the relevance of accessories as the "perfect compliment to a well-rounded look".

Not long after, Zara’s sister brand expanded its repertoire of fashion items with ready-to-wear clothing and shoes for women. Coming from the perspective of accessory makers, Uterqüe’s product lineup boasts strong attention to detail, giving their pieces an elevated edge.

Their online store is a trove of statement workwear and polished accessories that can take you to after hours, like a lustrous white top or an embroidered midi skirt. Most garments have classic, flattering silhouettes; prints and materials are where it’s really at: expect to see artisanal-inspired embellishments, elegant drapes, and silky finishes.

Of course, you can’t discuss Uterqüe without touching on their accessories—and this brand doesn’t hold back. From extravagant gems that could bedeck a Spanish queen’s neck to sculptural, marbled earrings that could draw attention to your lobes. Their shoe and bag selection are just as succulent.

It’s a level above Zara in that you aren’t inundated with trends to wear right now, but it doesn’t translate to boring pieces. Uterqüe is a shopping destination that strikes the elusive balance between the two.
